Our Jr. Pre K classrooms are full of energy and enthusiasm, and are ready to build the foundation for a lifetime of learning. With this idea in mind, the caregivers in our three-year-old classrooms introduce the children to pre-reading skills, language development, early math, thinking skills and social/life skills through multi-sensory, hands-on learning activities and games. Each child is assessed monthly to determine the pace and level of his or her development.
The curriculum for three-year old classes is organized into monthly themes. Each theme is carried out in various center activities and games, as well as through the reading of children's books related to the theme. Each month the children are also taught about a community worker and a special Saint. Monthly special days and/or guest speakers/visitors are included to enhance the children’s learning of the themes objectives.
Every morning, the caregivers conduct circle time, during which the children say a morning prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance, and practice the alphabet and numbers 1-20. Basic Spanish and simple Sign Language is taught in our Jr. Pre-K rooms. The caregivers also assigns jobs for the day (door holder, line leader, etc.), and sings nursery rhymes related to the monthly themes.
At St. Joseph Catholic ELC we believe READERS are LEADERS. With that in mind each Jr. Pre K classroom visits the St. Joseph Catholic ELC Library at least once a week. During their weekly visit the children are given the opportunity to “check out” a book to take back to their classroom for the week. Each class has a story read to them in the library during their weekly visit.
During the day, the children have the opportunity to participate in various group activities and art projects designed to stimulate the children's imagination and development. If weather permits, the children enjoy outdoor play in the playground twice daily.
Jr. Pre-K classrooms put a Daily Report in the hallway for our parents to get a quick overview of their child’s eating and sleeping habits as well as a daily sample of the classroom lessons covered for the day.
