The curriculum for two-year-old children is organized into monthly themes in order to promote thorough learning and understanding of each topic covered. Our program includes activities designed to satisfy the children's eagerness to explore the world which surrounds them. Children are assessed monthly to determine the pace and level of his or her development.
The two-year-old classrooms are organized into centers in order to facilitate the learning process for the children. Centers include a home center, reading center, and music center. A number of objects in the classroom are also labeled with their respective names in order to promote early literacy.
Every morning, our teachers conduct circle time, during which the children say a morning prayer, the Pledge of Allegiance, practice the alphabet, and numbers 1-10. The teacher also assigns jobs for the day; door holder, line leader, etc. Singing nursery rhymes together promote language and motor development.
During the day, the children are able to engage in exciting activities such as dramatic play with dress-up clothes, construction with Legos or large blocks, problem solving with simple puzzles, and a variety of connecting toys. Art projects in our two-year-old classrooms involve simple tasks such as gluing, coloring, modeling with play dough, and cutting with small scissors.
At St. Joseph Catholic ELC we believe READERS are LEADERS. With that in mind each two-year-old classroom visits the St. Joseph Catholic ELC Library at least once a week. During their weekly visit the children are given the opportunity to “check out” a book to take back to their classroom for the week. Each class has a story read to them in the library during their weekly visit.
The caregivers in the two-year-old classrooms help and encourage toilet training at this age; the children usually go to the restroom four times a day. If a child's parents feel that he/she is not ready to be potty trained, we will gladly wait until they deem it appropriate. If weather permits, the children enjoy outdoor play twice daily.
At the end of the day caregivers provide parents a "Daily Report" which includes important information about the two year old's day such as his/her general mood during the day, eating, sleeping habits and potty training.
